Position Overview
The Tax Manager plays a crucial role in delivering high-quality tax services to clients while supervising staff and contributing to practice growth at our clients Charlotte, NC accounting firms. This position description is adaptable for three CPA firms of varying sizes:
Top 10 Firm: A leading national practice with 1000+ professionals offering comprehensive services across multiple industries with global capabilities
Top 300 Firm: A regional practice with 100-250 professionals providing full-service accounting solutions to a diverse client base
Mid-sized Firm: A growing local/regional practice with 30-75 professionals balancing personalized service with comprehensive capabilities
Key Responsibilities
Client Service
- Manage a portfolio of business and individual tax clients across various industries
- Review and approve tax returns, including complex individual, partnership, corporate, trust, and estate returns
- Identify tax planning opportunities and proactively advise clients on tax minimization strategies
- Respond to IRS and state notices, coordinate tax audits, and handle tax controversy matters
- Maintain regular communication with clients throughout the year
Team Leadership
- Supervise, develop, and mentor tax associates and senior associates
- Assign and monitor work to ensure timely completion and quality control
- Provide technical guidance and review work of junior staff
- Participate in staff evaluations and performance reviews
- Assist with recruiting and onboarding new talent
Practice Development
- Participate in business development activities and networking events
- Identify and pursue cross-selling opportunities with existing clients
- Assist in proposal preparation and client presentations
- Contribute to firm marketing initiatives and thought leadership content
- Help develop specialized tax service offerings
Technical & Professional Development
- Stay current on federal and state tax laws, regulations, and rulings
- Identify and implement process improvements for tax compliance work
- Participate in continuing professional education and firm training programs
- Contribute to the development of firm tax policies and procedures
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field; Master's degree in Taxation preferred
- CPA license required
- 5-8 years of public accounting experience with a focus on tax services
- Progressive experience managing client relationships and supervising staff
Technical Skills
- Comprehensive knowledge of federal and state tax laws and regulations
- Proficiency with tax preparation software (UltraTax, CCH Axcess, or similar)
- Experience with tax research tools (RIA Checkpoint, CCH IntelliConnect)
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
Soft Skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
