Position Summary
The Tax Manager will play a critical role in managing complex tax engagements, developing strategic tax planning solutions, and leading a team of tax professionals. This position requires a sophisticated understanding of individual and real estate tax regulations, with a focus on high-net-worth client portfolios or real estate investment trusts (REITs).
Key Responsibilities
Technical Tax Expertise
- Prepare and review complex individual tax returns for high-net-worth clients, including those with multiple income streams, investment properties, and international tax considerations
- Develop comprehensive tax strategies for REIT structures, real estate investments, and pass-through entities
- Manage multi-state and international tax compliance requirements
- Conduct in-depth tax research to identify planning opportunities and ensure full compliance with current tax laws
Client Relationship Management
- Serve as the primary point of contact for sophisticated clients with complex tax needs
- Develop and maintain relationships with high-net-worth individuals and real estate investment groups
- Provide proactive tax planning and advisory services
- Communicate complex tax concepts to clients in clear, understandable terms
Team Leadership
- Supervise and mentor junior tax professionals
- Review and quality check tax returns and tax planning documents
- Conduct performance evaluations and professional development coaching
- Contribute to the firm's training and professional development programs
Strategic Contributions
- Participate in business development efforts
- Identify and implement process improvements
- Assist in developing the firm's service offerings for HNW and real estate clients
- Represent the firm at professional networking events and industry conferences
Qualifications
Required Credentials
- Active CPA license in North Carolina
- Minimum of 5-7 years of tax management experience
- Extensive experience with individual tax returns for high-net-worth clients
- Proven expertise in real estate and REIT tax compliance and planning
Technical Skills
- Advanced knowledge of:
- Individual tax compliance and planning
- Real estate investment taxation
- REIT tax structures
- Multi-state tax issues
- Partnership and S-Corporation taxation
- Proficiency in professional tax software (e.g., ProSeries, Lacerte, UltraTax)
- Advanced Excel and data analysis skills
