Senior Auditor

Position Overview


We are seeking an experienced Senior Auditor with substantial not-for-profit expertise to join our clients growing audit practice. The ideal candidate will lead audit engagements for nonprofit organizations while mentoring staff and maintaining strong client relationships.



Key Responsibilities



Audit Leadership & Execution

  • Plan and execute complex audit engagements for nonprofit clients, including developing audit programs and risk assessments
  • Lead fieldwork teams of 2-4 professionals, providing real-time guidance and review of work papers
  • Identify and communicate audit issues to partners and managers while proposing practical solutions
  • Ensure compliance with professional standards, firm methodology, and regulatory requirements
  • Review and analyze internal controls, making recommendations for improvement


Client & Team Management

  • Serve as primary day-to-day contact for nonprofit clients
  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships through professional communication and timely response
  • Mentor and train staff auditors, providing constructive feedback and performance evaluations
  • Manage project budgets, timelines, and resource allocation
  • Identify opportunities for additional services and support business development initiatives


Technical Expertise

  • Apply in-depth knowledge of GAAP, GAAS, and specific nonprofit accounting principles
  • Stay current with changes in accounting standards affecting the nonprofit sector
  • Ensure proper application of Form 990 reporting requirements
  • Review and analyze financial statements and disclosures specific to nonprofit entities
  • Identify and research complex accounting issues unique to nonprofit organizations


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field
  • CPA certification preferred
  • 5+ years of public accounting experience with at least 3 years focused on nonprofit clients
  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, including:
    • Fund accounting
    • Contribution revenue recognition
    • Net asset classifications
    • Functional expense allocation
    • Endowment accounting
  • Experience with single audits (Uniform Guidance)
  • Excellent project management and leadership skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Accounting or related field
  • Experience with nonprofit accounting software (e.g., Blackbaud, Sage Intacct)
  • Knowledge of nonprofit governance best practices
  • Experience with various nonprofit subsectors (healthcare, education, social services, etc.)
  • Involvement in professional associations related to nonprofit accounting
